Kyoto is a place rich with history. Once serving as Japan's capital, housing the emperor of Japan, Kyoto is now a beautiful city filled with grand temples and other historical architecture and monuments. It is a place where you get a feel for traditional Japanese culture, and a great place to go visit year-round. Although there are so many places to go see, we've compiled our list of the top ten things to do and see in Kyoto.

1. Check out Kinkakuji Temple

Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is possibly one of the most well-known temples in Kyoto and for good reason. This zen temple is built right by a large pond and its top two floors are covered in gold leaf, creating a picturesque scene.

2. Visit Nijo Castle

Nijo Castle is another place to definitely go see if you want to get a glimpse into Japan's past. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built in 1603 and contains three different areas, the Honmaru, the Ninomaru, and the garden areas, but usually only the Ninomaru Palace and some of the garden areas are regularly accessible to the general public. This is a great spot to visit at different times in the year to see either the cherry blossoms or changing leaf colors depending upon the season.

3. Go to Nishiki Market 

This spot is a must visit for those who love traditional Japanese seafood and other street foods. This large street market offers all kinds of unique Kyoto dishes to try and ingredients that you can purchase to try making your own Japanese dish. Keep an eye out for samples offered or you may just miss out on something that might end up a favorite.

4. Check out Gion

Gion is a famous Geisha district and a must see place if you want to get a glimpse of a traditional Japanese dance, the Maiko dance. Maikos and Geikos can be seen wandering around Gion giving the vibe of being transported to the past. Just remember to act respectfully if you do see them.

5. Walk along Philosopher's Path

This is a must see location in Kyoto especially if you are traveling around April. The stone path runs parallel among cherry trees which, in April, bloom and burst with colors of soft pink. Even when the trees aren't blooming, this path is nice to walk on if only to meditate or reflect upon life. There are temples and shrines nearby so these can be nice stops as well if throughout your walk, you crave a change of scenery.

6. Kyoto International Manga Museum

If you are a fan of Japanese manga, this is the perfect spot to check out. They have an extensive collection of manga and even hold exhibitions from time to time. If you're craving a different change of pace, check out the art that has made Japan so popular. If you're not the biggest fan of manga though, there are many other great museums that Kyoto has to offer!

7. Go to a Japanese Tea Ceremony

Now this activity is not limited to one distinct location, but Kyoto, in general, is a great spot for experiencing a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. If you enjoy green tea or matcha, this ceremony that blends the concept of formality and grace is a perfect way to enjoy it while experiencing the traditional cultural practices that went along with enjoying it.

8. Visit the Arashiyama district

When in Kyoto, you should try to visit Arashiyama if you love sight-seeing. There are many things to do in Arashiyama, but just exploring the district in general is a great way to discover Kyoto. Some popular destinations within Arashiyama are the Bamboo Grove, the many temples like Tenryu-ji, and the monkey park. If you have some sparetime, why not take a ride on a rickshaw to see what Arashiyama has to offer!

9. Kyoto Railway Museum

One of the newer must-see destinations in Japan, this is a perfect spot for those who are fascinated with Japan's bullet trains and trains. The museum also offers a short ride on a steam locomotive for a small fee. This is a great activity for families and those who want to learn about one of Japan's most important public transportation systems. 

10. Kyoto Imperial Palace

As far as cultural landmarks, this is one of the most important in relatively recent Kyoto history. The Kyoto Imperial Palace used to be home  to the emperor and his family up until 1868. Most of the grounds are open to the public so this is a great place to visit and tours are often held, however access to inside of the buildings usually are not allowed. However it is worth going to if only to admire the architecture, the beautiful gardens, and the history that the place holds.
