A Temple of Englightment
Enkoji is a Rinzai Sect Buddhist Temple founded by shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. It started as a school to "enlighten" the people about the law under Tokugawa's rule in a political initiative. The school published books and the wood prints of the books are still preserved at Enkoji today. The temple was moved many times, but during the Meiji Restoration it was rebuilt as a training facility for Buddhist nuns. The temple is also famous for its suikinkutsu, which is a water garden instrument that makes a pleasant sound.
