The 1001 Bodies of Kannon
Sanjusangendo Temple is officially known as Tendai Shoumyou-in. The name Sanjusangendo, though, comes from the main hall, where the principle idol of the goddess Kannon is surrounded by 1000 more statues of Kannon. Over 120 of the idol figures are from the Heian Period of 794-1185, and the remainder of the idol statues are from the Kamakura Period.
There has also been an archery contest held every January since the 16th century.
