Kyoto's Oldest Park
Maruyama Park, or Maruyama Koen, is Kyoto's oldest public park. The park opened in 1886 in the center of Gion. There are over 800 cherry trees here, and the park is famous for its weeping cherry trees. There is also a teahouse and a restaurant in addition to the Japanese gardens. The park is also a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty.
In March and April during cherry blossom season, the park is crowded with people doing "hanami," or cherry blossom viewing picnincs. There are also food stalls all around the park during the season selling traditional Japanese festival food.
