Mentaiko is popular all over Japan, but it is especially popular in Kyushu, and originates from Fukuoka. Mentaiko is marinated cod roe.
It's eaten in a variety of ways, including on pizza, as a pasta sauce, in bread, and in rice balls, but often it's just eaten by itself while drinking beer, sake, or shochu, or just eaten over rice. It's delicous and a must-try in Fukuoka!
