A Town of Tradition
Kakunodate was a castle town established in 1620, and was divided into two sections: the merchant district and the samurai district.
Today, the merchant district and the samurai district are both well preserved and interesting to visit. In the merchant district, historical buildings lined the wide streets. Most notably, the Ando Jozo Miso storehouse and shop sells soy sauce and miso products made in the same way for 150 years. Other shops sell cherry bark woodcrafts and other traditional products.
