Fukuoka, Japan Nov. 23 Sat 7:40AM
As yet mostly “undiscovered,” especially by non-Japanese tourists, we’d like to introduce Shika Island, or “Shikanoshima,” as a special destination.
Technically part of Fukuoka city, the island is accessible by a short ferry ride from Hakata. If you’re looking for a nice spot to escape from the crowded bustle of Fukuoka and relax on the beach, then take a short hike up to an observatory (Shiomi Park Observatory) where you can catch a great view of the bay, metropolis, and ocean, then this is the place for you.
Wander into the woods and you’ll find small shrines dotted among the trees, and when you get hungry step into one of a number of local seafood restaurants that, while delicious, are much more affordable than a tourist-oriented joint that you’d find in a guidebook..
With the ferry taking less than 30 minutes from Hakata Port, nothing’s stopping you from adding a short trip to this island to your time in Fukuoka.
