The Temple of the Data Clan
Rinnoji Temple was originally constructed in 1441 as the family temple of the Date clan, a feudal clan. The temple moved with them wherever they went, and was moved to Sendai in 1602 for the most powerful warlord in Sendai at the time, Date Masamune. Although the temple was destroyed in the 19th century, it has since been reconstructed in its original style.
While the temple itself may not seem extraordinary, the temple gardens are beautiful.
The temple also has events regularly- every Saturday there is a Zen meditation session that anyone can join, and once a month there are shakyo and shabutsu sessions, which are the trascription of Buddhist sutras in pursuit of enlightenment, which anyone can also join.
