The Shrine of Sendai
Osaki Hachiman Shrine, or Osaki Hachimangu, was founded by Sendai's most powerful feudal lord, Date Masamune. The shrine is dedicated to the Shinto god of war, Hachiman. The shrine is a great example fo the Momoyama architecture style of gongen-tsukuri, with black lacquer and gold leaf designs.
The shrine is also known for its famous festival, the Dontosai. This event is held at many shrines during the New Year holidays, where worshippers of the shrine bring their New Year's decorations to be burned at the shrine for good health and good luck in the coming year. Most notably, men dressed only in loincloths parade around the shrine.
