Osaka's Oldest Temple
Shitennoji is Osaka's oldest temple and one of Japan's oldest temples. It is the first temple in Japan to have been built by the government. The temple was founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, one of the first supporters of Buddhism in Japan.
The outer temple grounds are free, but the inner temple, the Gokuraku-jodo Garden and the temple's treasure house are entered only through paid admission. The temple's pagoda is in the inner hall.
