A Volcanic Mud Onsen

Goshogake Onsen is located in the Towada-Hachimantai National Park on Mount Hachimandai. Like many of the other onsen in the area, there is just one ryokan in the area with public baths open to both day visitors and those staying at the ryokan. There are multiple wooden indoor baths, saunas, and an outdoor bath with views of the mountain. There is also a space to apply volcanic mud on the skin.

Around the onsen there are walking paths along many of the hot spring sources, mud ponds, miniature volcanoes, and sulfur vents. Japan's largest mud volcano, the Odoro Volcano, is located along the paths.

There are also trails in the surrounding area through the marhsland and forest on the mountains, as well as a seven kilometer long path that connects Goshogake Onsen with Tamagawa Onsen.
