Cash
The preferred payment
Although there are more places in Japan accepting credit cards and smartphones as payment methods, it's still quite common for only cash to be accepted in some local tourist spots, small restaurants, or shops. Lockers at locations such as train stations require coins, and buses generally do not accept bills above 1000 yen, so it may be helpful to have some cash ready!
Handkerchief

In Japan, many public restrooms do not have paper towels or hand dryers. It might be a good idea to carry a handkerchief or a small towel with you, should you be so inclined!
A photocopy of your passport
Just in case
Have a photocopy of the information page of your passport and store it in a different location from your passport. When you have lost your passport during your trip, this will save you so much time and effort to have a new one issued!
A portable phone charger
Never run out of power
A dead phone during your trip may be a horrifying idea if you are relying on your phone for navigation and guidance. Packing a portable charger could always be helpful!
