An Imperial Temple
Shorenin was formerly the temple of the imperial abbot of the Tendai Buddhist sect headquarters on Mount Hiei. The abbot was required to be chosen from the imperial family or high court aristocracy. These types of temples are called monzeki temples, where traditionally head priests were members of the Imperial family. After the Great Kyoto Fire of 1788, it was used as a temporary imperial palace.
The temple gardens are lit up in spring and autumn with over 1000 lamps. The grounds are also lit up by blue lights, which is a must- see in Kyoto.
