An Important Sendai Shrine
Toshogu Shrine is located in Sendai City, and was constructed in 1654 by Date Tadamune, a second generation lord of the main feudal family who ruled Sendai. The shrine is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the first Japanese shogun. Many of parts of the shrine are designated as Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government.
The shrine is surrounded by cedar and cherry trees, which makes the shrine popular during the cherry blossom season. There is also an antique market here on the fourth Sunday of every month.
