Japanese Convenience Stores

One of the more unexpected and randomly fascinating things about Japan are their convenience stores. Referred to as conbini in Japanese, the main convenience stores in Japan are 7-eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson, althought here are many more found throughout Japan, especially in the cities. They often offer free WiFi which is handy for travelers and citizens alike, as well as a 24-hr ATM machines in select locations, but it is viewed as rude to come in just for the WiFi so it is encouraged to buy something in return.

Unlike the convenience stores found in much of the United States, the selection of items and foods found within the convenience stores are extensive. Food is the main reason why Japanese convenience stores are held in high-regard and are even a popular destination among tourists. In Japans convenience stores, the nachos and hot-dogs are replaced by somewhat healthier alternatives. The food within these convenience stores can make up a full-course meal because of the great variety found. Of course, many of the things found in the states can be found in Japan, like candy and sodas, but there are also way more things that can be found in Japan that are unique to their convenience stores. Here are some of the delicious foods you can find in a Japanese convenience store.

1. Sandwiches

The sandwiches in Japanese convenience stores probably surpass what you can find in the states. Referred to as sandos, they have many different kinds of sandwiches with higher quality ingredients. You can find the basics like non-suspicious egg salad sandwiches, ham sandwiches, and cucumber sandwiches. However they also offer tonkotsu sandwiches which are essentially fried meat sandwiches, and seasonal (and delicious!) strawberry sandwiches which are strawberries and whipped cream between bread.

2. Onigiri

Onigiri are Japanese riceballs that come with an assortment of fillings. They are a convenient, inexpensive and fast food to grab for many Japanese people who are rushing to catch a train or are rushing to their next destination. The food matches the fast-pace of the city lifestyle in Japan.

3. Fried Chicken

Another food that can be found in the stores are fried chicken. Usually the fried chicken of Japanese convenience stores are crispy and fresh, and make delicious snacks.

4. Bentos

Bentos can also be found in their convenience stores. Bentos are packaged meal sets that contain portions of different foods to make a relatively balanced meal and are a convenient food to pick-up for those who don't have time to cook.

5. Oden

One of the more surprising things you can find in some Japanese convenience stores is a food called oden. Oden is especially popular in the winter time and consists of various ingredients like eggs and fish cakes in a salty broth. Popular throughout Japan, it is also conveniently served in convenience stores during the winter.

6. Buns and Pastries

The selection of buns and pastries is once again usually unparalleled. Most Japanese conbinis have Chinese buns with interesting fillings like curry, as well as different prepackaged desserts like cheesecake. Although pastries can be found in many convenience stores, the ones in Japan are especially good.

7. Cup Noodles

Cup noodles are a staple in Japan for their convenience, their variety, and their taste. Because of this, in the convenience stores, there are usually stocked with many different flavors and brands making for a cheap and easily accessible meal.

Japanese convenience stores tend to carry much more items including a vast selection of drinks, candy, and toiletries. Although on paper, many of the items sound similar to things you can find in the convenience stores of the states, it is actually far different. Their use of fresh ingredients and their large selection makes it an interesting spot to stop in for all your Japanese goodies.
