Short reads: Onsens and tattoos

Nowadays, many people have tattoos. People get them for a number of reasons - artistic expression, religious or cultural purposes, for symbolic purposes etc. And while tattoos are becoming a bit more common in Japan, many are surprised though to know that there is still a stigma regarding tattoos in Japan that is still prevalent today.

Japan has a long history with tattoos that goes beyond the yakuza (Japanese criminal gang), but one of the main reasons why tattoos are still considered taboo is due to their association with said gang and crime.

While in more recent times, the stigma is slowly fading, it still remains alive in much of Japan’s traditional rules. This means that it also extends to rules of local establishments within the area disallowing those with tattoos. This includes many bathhouses and onsens, as well as ryokans.

Sometimes, travelers are surprised to know this and can be caught off guard. Especially when trying to experience a traditional onsen. Some people may be turned away if they have tattoos, or if their tattoo is large and noticeable. Some establishments may allow those with tattoos if they cover it with a bandage or if it is very small. However, not all onsens and bathhouses subscribe to this rule. Many in fact are aware of not only differences in cultural views regarding tattoos, but also of changing times. Because of this, there are more and more establishments that are doing away with the tattoo ban.

Every culture has their history and traditions that shape modern day rules. While we may not always know of them or understand them, it’s important to try and be aware of when traveling. It can definitely help in that travelers aren’t caught unaware or by surprise! But of course, there are tattoo friendly establishments out there. So stay tuned for another post on tattoo-friendly onsen places in Japan!
