Obtaining an International Drivers Permit for Japan

Mar. 19 Mon by Jennifer Things to See

Being able to drive in Japan would be convenient in your travels. You can have the freedom to go out and see more of Japan at anytime. It is especially convenient if you'd like to visit more remote areas or areas off-the-beaten path, as there are some areas that trains simply to not reach. To drive in Japan, an international drivers permit is required for US citizens. Although extra steps must be taken to get a permit, the process is relatively simple. There are different regulations and rules depending on the country in which you reside, so please check with your countries regulations and procedures.

What you will need

  1. -Filled out application form for which ever organization you decide to go through
  2. -American Automobile Association Form or American Automobile Touring Alliance
  3. -Two colored passport size photos of yourself
  4. -A valid U.S. driver's license
  5. -$20.00 payment

*Depending on which organization you choose to go through, there may be slight differences in procedure or payment method so please be aware.

Things to know

  1. -The only organizations authorized to issue International Driving Permits (IDP) are the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance. There are sometimes scams regarding getting your permit, so this is important to be aware of.
  2. -You must have your IDP before entering Japan, one cannot be obtained once you are in the country
  3. -You must have a valid state license (U.S.) in order to get your IDP. In addition, you must have your state license along with your IDP while driving in Japan.
  4. -IDP's may not be issued more than 6 months in advance of desired date you wish to use it
  5. -You must be 18 years of age or older to qualify for an IDP
  6. -It takes about 10 to 15 business days to get your permit processed and then shipped out.

Although your permit should be valid for one year after being issued, there are some other rules and exceptions regarding your permit usage and validity, so be sure to ask about any specific regulations based upon the length of your stay!
