May. 29 Wed by Y.N. Things to Know

Starting March of 2024, Hokuriku Shinkansen’s route from Tokyo has been extended beyond Kanazawa (Ishikawa Prefecture), to Tsuruga in Fukui prefecture. Previously it took about 4 hours from Tokyo to Tsuruga, but this extension trims about 50 minutes off of the previous travel time.  One of the three prefectures in the Hokuriku area, Fukui is expected to become another favorite travel destination from Tokyo with this new access.

Here are notable destinations beyond Kanazawa now easily accessible with  Hokuriku Shinkansen.

One of the recommended onsen districts to visit from Kaga Onsen Station is “Yamanaka Onsen.” This onsen resort is accessible by local bus from the station (about 40 minutes ride). Visitors can choose to stay overnight at this picturesque hot spring resort or enjoy a day trip, as there are onsen facilities available for those not staying at a hotel.  While you are in Yamanaka Onsen resort,  do not miss your opportunity to visit traditional Kutaniyaki workshops, where you can learn about Ishikawa prefecture’s traditional porcelain.
