A Closer Look
When traveling in Kyoto, it's impossible not to be entranced by maiko and geisha culture. We know how exciting it is to see geisha, and it's just as exciting to become one!
One of our Tokyo Tourist Information Center staff went through the makeover process!

The studio is only a five minute walk from Kyoto station.

First, you have to complete your registration number, including your home address so the studio can ship the photos home to you after your trip!
The smallest package includes three photos, and you can also order data files for an additonal cost.
First, it's time for makeup. An interesting part about this maiko makeup is that the blush was applied before the white foundation to give just a hint of pink under the white makeup on the face and neck area.
This design on the back of the neck is the signature of a maiko, or apprentice geisha.
The lipstick is actually very significant, because a first-year apprentice geisha will only apply lipstick to the bottom lip. During the second year, they can apply lipstick to both lips.
After makeup, you choose the kimono you'd like to wear from a huge selection!
Maiko kimono are extremely intricate and expensive, and fine kimono can cost up to one million yen (about USD $100,000).
Tying an obi is a very complex process, and experts go to school to learn how to dress in kimono.
Lastly, the wig!
Real Maiko don’t wear wigs, but they do their hair every few days with wax. Because the hairstyles are so elaborate, they sleep on a special pillow that elevates their head and neck.
After the shoot, you can also take photos with your own camera.
After the photoshoot, there is a changing room to remove makeup. It isn't hard to remove, so you can still do a full day of sight seeing!
