Stay Cool
Combating the summer heat is probably the main issue in Japan. Summers tend to get quite hot, but combined with the humidity, the feeling is almost doubled. Here are a few tips on staying cool during the summer
1. Drink Plenty of Water
It's easy to neglect drinking water in favor of other delicious summery drinks like soda. Since Japan doesn't have dry summers, you may not be able to feel thirst as much. But since it is so hot, it's important to remember to stay hydrated. Japan is also heavily reliant on walking as a mode of transportation (from train station to train station, sightseeing, etc). Staying hydrated with plenty of water is important for times like these where you'll be more active as well!
2. Carry around a handheld fan
You'll notice in Japan that many people during the summer walk around with handheld fans. This is another way to stay cool, and as it is common in Japan, you won't have to worry about feeling out of place holding a fan. There are all sorts of cute designs that you can get, and you can find thema round many stores in Japan. They also make cute souvenirs!
Prepare for the environment
1. Bring an umbrella
As hot as Japan summers can be, June and July are also considered rainy season. The rains usually come hard and fast, and don't last too long. If you don't have an umbrella, you can buy one in Japan. Although rainy season tends to be June and July, some places experience rain off and on much earlier. On the contrary, Hokkaido tends to have nice weather without much rain until June, but as weather is unpredictable, it's always best to double check the forecast before your trip.
*Tip: Pack light clothing that is breathable and easy to layer. Include a light rain jacket especially during rainy season. Japan has sticky heat packs called hokkairo that you can buy in stores to keep you warm during the rain too!
2. Bring insect repellant
Although summer is so much fun, with the heat and humidity bring the mosquitoes. We recommend bringing some insect repellant as a defense, and wearing some long pants at night to protect yourself.
Try all the delicious summer treats!
1. Kakigori
Kakigori is a delicious shaved ice treat that you can get in many places during the summer. You could say it is the quintessential summer treat in Japan, and is an icon of summer. You can try some unique flavors such as matcha with red bean, or just plain red bean (azuki) flavor. It's a great way to keep cool during the hotter months, and can be enjoyed at summer festivals too!
2. Watermelon
Japan knows a thing or two about producing really delicious produce. They tend to be a bit more expensive, but the flavor more than makes up for it. Watermelon is considered the ultimate summer fruit. Images of enjoying watermelon while watching fireflies fly by paint the most classic summer picture.
3. Somen
Somen are Japanese cold noodles where the noodles are dipped into a sauce. During the summer, these noodles help keep you cool, while also filling up your stomach. It's a light, delicious meal so you don't feel completely weighed down by your food. You can enjoy somen topped with green onions, cucumbers, whatever you like!
Be aware of all events
Our final tip to get the most out of your summer in Japan is to be aware of all the events going on around you. There are many festivals that occur during summer, including spectacular firework festivals! The events also tend to bring good food that you can enjoy, and tons of activites to try out depending on the activity. You may even get the opportunity to wear a yukata or jinbei as these are common festival summer wear!^^
