Japan has many things that make the country unique and a popular destination to visit. Perhaps one of the most interesting things about Japan are all the different subcultures that exist, especially within the busy cities. The subcultures range in extremes, but probably one of the most notable subcultures is the one known as the "otaku" subculture. Popularized by people who were proud to be referred to as otaku, many people think of "otaku" as people who really enjoy manga and anime. Although the term now encompasses a wide range of people who are just mega-fans of something (could be anything really), the anime/manga otaku continues to be the most notable and well-known. And why wouldn't it be? Japan is a mecca for anime and manga, and there are so many specialty products and goods that cater to almost every anime that you can possibly dream of.
There are plenty of bookstores, specialty shops, gift stores, and cafes that cater to the manga niche. For those who are fans of manga and anime, and/or are self-proclaimed "otakus", here are some places you should definitely check out in Japan! No judgement here, we love all things manga and anime!
TOKYO
Tokyo is without a doubt the main mecca for all things anime. Not only is it a major city which means that there are more stores available in general, but there are literally whole streets dedicated to anime! Honestly, if you love all things anime and manga, whatever type it may be, Tokyo is the place to go. If you're a fan of Studio Ghibli, Tokyo has a museum and a store filled with all your Ghibli characters. If you're a fan of Pokemon, there is actually a mega store dedicated to all things Pokemon. One Piece...Dragon Ball...whatever your favorite character from your favorite anime or manga may be, there is almost guaranteed a store that has related products related to your theme. Whether it's figurines, mangas, or themed foods, Tokyo has it all! Let's get a bit more specific shall we?
Tokyo is large and there are so many specific spots to go check out. Definitely for those who have an interest in manga and anime, Tokyo is the one spot you should definitely visit, if nothing else. However there are a couple other cities to go check out that have a gem or two.
OSAKA
Osaka the other major city with a bustling nightlife and plenty of good food galore. There is even a Universal Studios in Osaka that is also a themed paradise for people who are mega-fans of movies. But how is it on the manga and anime front...?
KYOTO
Kyoto is the cultural heart of Japan, where old traditions are still practiced and heavily influence everyday life...But there is also a hidden gem to be found for manga lovers, and that is in a museum.
If you're planning a trip to Japan, these are definitely places to go check out. Japan is an amazing place for those who have an appreciation for the artsy side. Places like Harajuku and Shibuya also have cool niche spots to check out, and really highlights the subcultures of Japan.
