The Gardens of Japan

Japanese gardens are held in high regard across countries due to it's pleasing aesthetic, and it's easy to see why. In Japan, nature and the aesthetic environment are valued highly. This is why the parks are well taken care of and clean, and their gardens are usually maintained to what seems like perfection. Because of this, Japanese gardens are known throughout the world and are a popular tourist destination for foreigners. There are many types of gardens in Japan that are all beautiful to look at, even ones that aren't the typical, standard "Japanese garden" that you think of when picturing it. There are also beautiful and popular botanical gardens that also continue to be popular destinations for locals and tourists alike. We've created a list of some beautiful gardens that are worth visiting.

1. Ryoan-ji Temple Garden

The Ryoan-ji temple Garden is one of the most well-known rock gardens in Japan and is located in Kyoto within the Ryoan-ji temple grounds. This garden preserves tradition in a classic zen style rock garden. The original garden was recreated in 1797 after the temple burned down, but the origins of the first garden remain debated over by historians. Besides the rock garden, there is also a park garden that features a pretty little pond and a peaceful atmosphere.

2. Adachi Museum of Art Garden 

The Adachi Museum of Art was founded in 1980, and is located in Yasugi in the Shimane prefecture. Although it is a museum, it might just be better known for their garden. The garden has been highly esteemed by many and is just one example of a Japanese style garden. It is a must visit location for those who prefer to gather their thoughts in the center of a beautiful, serene garden.

3. Ninomaru Garden

The Ninomaru Garden is located in Kyoto within Nijo Castle. Ninomaru garden has a lot of history and is a very pretty, culturally significant garden. The garden contains a pond with three islands that according to some sites, are symbolic. They supposedly symbolize Horai-eternal happiness, and a turtle and a crane-for longevity. The pond also features carefully placed rock formations that give aesthetic pleasure.

4. Korakuen Garden

Korakuen Garden is found in Okayama and was voted one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan. The garden landscape changes with the seasons and provides a different but equally gorgeous view for each season. Historically, this garden was used as a place for entertaining guests, but is now open to the public. 

5. Shukkeien Garden

Shukkeien Garden is a lovely garden located in Hiroshima. Like many Japanese gardens, this garden features perfectly placed trees, and carefully placed bridges and paths. Shukkeien was created shortly after the completion of Hiroshima castle. This garden has various tea houses places throughout where visitors can go to enjoy the garden landscape.

Japan has many more beautiful gardens, each offering something unique. It's easy to see why Japanese gardens has the reputation it does. Each garden seems to be so carefully planned and designed, with beautiful topiary and other botanical vegetation thoughtfully placed.
