Suizenji Garden may not be the largest or most overwhelming of Japan's gardens, but it is a small place perfect for experiencing traditional Japanese aesthetics and taking a break from the surrounding Kumamoto city.
The garden was built by the Hosokawa clan which rules the domain from Kumamoto castle for hundreds of years, but there's nothing ostensibly warlike about this garden. In rather charming fashion, it was designed to recreate the 53 post stations of the Tokaido, the most important road of the Edo period which connected Edo (modern day Tokyo) and Kyoto. There's even a miniature Mt. Fuji!
