Kyushu's Foremost Castle
Kumamoto Castle, one of the most iconic sites in Kyushu and one of the most magnificent castles in all of Japan, has faced a turbulent history. Designed with battle strategy in mind, it was the home of feudal lords for hundreds of years. In the late 19th century most of the original structure was burnt down when it was seiged by the legendary Saigo Takamori (much of what remains of the castle today is a reconstruction.)
In April 2016 the castle faced a new challenge together with the people of the prefecture it symbolizes, as several violent earthquakes hit the region, severely damaging the castle structure. Now the castle stands as a symbol of recovery for Kyushu. The more people that come to see this magnificent structure, the faster the damaged areas can be revitalized.
Representing this revitalization, limited tours of the castle have been resumed since June 2016.
Visitors will be presented with one a castle structure comprised of multiple buildings, some originals and some reconstructions (built with methods and materials faithful to the original), a museum about the history of the castle and recreated extravagent palace rooms that displayed the wealth and taste of the daimyos who welcomed visitors there.
A recommended side trip to the castle is the Sakura no baba Johsaien, an interactive facility next to the castle where visitors can experience the history of Kumamoto. There are also many restaurants and souvenir shops offering Kumamoto's original dishes, such as basashi (horse sashimi). Kimono rental is also available for those who want to take a stroll.
