One of the World's Largest Caldera Volcanoes

Mt. Aso is an active volcano boasting the largest caldera in the world. Although roads and paved paths now extend to the peak and a ropeway offers unbelievable views, visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of this mighty reminder of nature's power should carefully check up to date information about the volcano, as volcanic activity often means that tourists cannot approach the caldera or ride on the ropeway. Those with asthma or other respiratory problems should also be careful, as Aso is indeed an active volcano spewing sometimes intense gases.

However, those brave enough to take the mountain on when conditions are appropriate will be overwhelmed by experience and views offered.
As it is a highly revered site as well as a popular tourist destination, there are trains and buses leading to the mountain from several major transportation hubs in Kyushu.

Mount Nakadake, one of these volcanic peaks is open to tourists by train and the aforementioned ropeway. Close to Mount Nakadake is Kusasenri-ga-hama, a grass plane with cows and horses. Visitors especially enjoy horse riding, which visitors can do from March to December. Views of Nakadake from the plain are spectacular. Komezuka is another popular place of Nakadake. It is a cone-shaped volcano with walking trails.

Regarded as a holy spot since ancient times, Aso Shrine has long been one of the most important Shinto Shrines in Kyushu. While the architecture of its gate and offering hall were forceful and impressive, sadly the shrine took very heavy damage in the 2016 Kyushu earthquakes, and the gate collapsed. Visitors to the area however are still warmly welcomed, and tourism is one of the best ways to revitalize the region.
