Basashi, a local speciality of Kumamoto prefecture, is raw horse meat.
Although the concept itself may have a certain shock factor for those not used to eating horse (and chances are you aren't unless you're from Kyushu), but the dish elicits reactions ranging from those claiming that it's tasty, but not tasty enough for the price, to some hardcore fans, who claim that the best way to eat Basashi is to get it straight from the butcher. Pair it with your own choice of salt, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, or a special kind of "Basashi soy sauce," and preferably a glass of shochu, Kyushu's signature liquor.
