A Kagoshima Landmark
Sakurajima (Cherry blossom island) is an active volcano that stands on an island in the middle of Kinko Bay about 1/2 mile from Kagoshima City. It erupts frequently and is always surrounded by a cloud of ash from those eruptions- sometimes ten times a day or more!
Sakurajima and Ash Cloud
Sakurajima is a fun half-day or so trip from Kagoshima City. It is accessible by a ten-minute ferry over the Kinko Bay, which is really beautiful on clear days. In warmer months, dolphins are often seen swimming in the bay and can be spotted from the ferry.
The island itself has a few attractions, but it is mostly worth a drive or a bike ride (rentable at the port) around the island to see the nature on the island, to hike, and to see views of Kagoshima City from across the bay. For walking, the Nagisa Lava Trail is a walking trail is a 3 kilometer trail through part of the site of the 1914 eruption on Kagoshima that highlights the growth of plants in the environment crated by the lava since that time.
