Arguably one of the most popular and most-visited spots in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Motonosumi Shrine is a gorgeous shrine in the Nagato area.

Situated at the edge of a cliff, Motonosumi Shrine consists of 123 red torii gates that wind down a hill that overlooks a breathtaking ocean view. Considered one of the most beautiful sights in Japan by many sources, this is a must-visit location. The bright red of the gates is gorgeous against the green of the trees and the deep blue of the ocean.

The shrine is relatively new in comparison to other shrines in Japan, with the construction beginning in 1987. It is said that the shrine was built for the white fox deity that brings success financially, in fishing, and in safe passages at sea.

Visitors can walk through and down the rows of torii gates, and make an offering if they so wish at the bottom. The last gate is larger than the rest, and the offering box is placed in a hard to reach place. It is said that if you are able to get your offering into the box, good fortune will come your way.

The shrine is certainly a photogenic place and it's not one to miss if in the Yamaguchi Prefecture. With the glittering sea below and clear blue skies above, this place is sure to be good for the soul.
