About Tochigi: A World Away from Tokyo

Tochigi Prefecture, located just an hour outside of Tokyo, is a center of historic buildings, shrines, and temples, as well as the beautiful nature surrounding them, especially in Nikko, where the temples and shrines make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The prefecture is surrounded by mountains and has great hot spring resorts created by the volcanic mountains.

---Toshogu Shrine, Nikko---

Toshogu Temple

Nikko's UNESCO World Heritage site, the Shrines and Temples of Nikko, is made up of over 100 religious buildings, including Toshogu Shrine, where Japan's most powerful samurai, Tokugawa Ieyasu, is enshrined. Nikko is also home to Futarasan Shrine, which has a history of over 1,200 years, and Rinnoji Temple, the largest wooden structure in eastern Japan.

With over 600 onsens nestled in the prefecture's volcanic spring source regions, Tochigi is one of the most popular destinations for hot springs in Japan. Located just an hour outside of Tokyo, Tochigi is especially popular with travelers for its accessibility combined with its traditional, rustic atmosphere. It is also famous for "yukimi" onsen, or outdoor hot springs in the snow where visitors can enjoy the snowy landscape from the hot baths.

---Yunishigawa Onsen---

Tochigi is also a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts- hiking, canyoning, and white water rafting are just a few of the outdoor activities that are available. Tochigi has breathtaking views and is a world away from Tokyo, but just an hour away by train.
