The largest lake in Japan
Lake Biwa, also known as Biwako, is the largest freshwater lake in all of Japan. This lake is commonly referred to in novels, poetry, and songs about historical battles.
From an aerial view, the lake is shaped like a Japanese string instrument called the biwa. It is believed that the lake was named after this instrument during the Edo period.
The lake is a reservoir for both Kyoto and Otsu cities, providing fresh water for around 15 million people throughout the Kansai region. Many freshwater fish swim in Lake Biwa, and freshwater pearls can be harvested from the lake as well!'
The Biwa Canal from 1890 still exists, but is now all stone- and drenched in grass and mosses.
Some beautiful beaches that are worth visiting are Shiga Beach and Omi-Maiko.
This is also a beautiful site to watch the sun rise or set, or to watch hanabi (fireworks) during the summer!
Lake Biwa is a wonderful spot to visit – especially for those interested in nature or photography! Biwa is located in Shiga Prefecture, but is just a 45 minute ride away from Kyoto.
