A glimpse of the Edo period
Kawagoe's main attraction is its "Kura-zukuri (warehouse) streets". Kura-zukuri developed as a townhouse style in the Edo period (1603-1868), and here in Kawagoe, we can see a glimpse of Edo that cannot be seen in Tokyo today.
This townscape full of sentiment is a popular spot to stroll around among people in Japan and is only 30 minutes by train from Ikebukuro Station in Tokyo.
Kimono Experience
Walking around the streets of Kawagoe in a traditional kimono is a fun way to let yourself blend into the nostalgic scenery of the city.
There are several kimono rental stores in Kawagoe, and you can choose the kimono of your choice. Some of the stores will let you store your baggage with them so you can freely enjoy your kimono experience.
The Bell of Time
The symbol of Kawagoe is the Toki no Kane, or Time Bell Tower. The Toki no Kane (literally meaning “Bell of Time”) is located right in the center of the walking area and has been selected as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan to Preserve”. The bell is still rung four times a day at 6:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00.
Rickshaw
Sightseeing by rickshaw also adds to the atmosphere. The rickshaw driver is well-versed in the city of Kawagoe and will suggest a route according to your preference. The driver can surely take you on a route to experience the charms of Kawagoe, so a rickshaw is recommended for first-time visitors. The seat is surprisingly higher than it looks, which lets you feel the pleasant wind as you ride through the streets of Kawagoe.
Hikawa Shrine
Hikawa Shrine attracts many tourists for its belief in the god of matchmaking or binding ties between people.
There are many adorable amulets available, but the "tai-mikuji”, which are omikuji (fortunes) shaped like a sea bream, is especially popular.
During summer, more than 2,000 wind chimes are decorated which makes it a very popular photo spot.
Eating and Drinking
In Kawagoe, you will find many sweets made of sweet potatoes, a local specialty. The humongous sweet potato chips are especially popular among those who seek something to snack on.
There is also a "Kashiya Yokocho", a small street lined with sweets shops, where you will surely be able to enjoy both eating and finding your favorite souvenirs.
