A Gorgeous Getaway

Serenity. Peace. Nature. Picture yourself in the warmth of a calming hot spring bath surrounded by lush greenery. Only the sound of silence surrounds you, marred only by the rustling of leaves and distant bird calls. That is what Takaragawa Onsen brings. It's a place that evokes a sense of tranquility, where thoughts and stresses come to wash away with the soothing waters of an onsen.

Takaragawa Onsen is nestled in the trees of mountains of Minakami in Gunma Prefecture. The onsen is a part of the ryokan Osenkaku, the only ryokan within Takaragawa Onsen. Although there is only one spot that makes Takaragawa an onsen destination, it is far from lacking and continues to be a favored onsen getaway. And even when there are people, it does not disrupt the sereneness of the hot spring as Japanese hot spring culture gives a respect to the place and people, and as a result, people tend to talk in low, hushed voices or relax in complete silence.

There are 5 different kinds of onsens in Takaragawa Onsen, including one that is considered one of the largest in Japan. There are a mix of mixed gender baths and gender separated ones, but guests can cover their bodies with towels in the mixed gender ones which is not often seen in other onsen places throughout Japan. This makes it more popular with foreign visitors who aren't quite used to the traditional customs of onsen bathing.

For travelers interested in going to Takaragawa Onsen, it is something to note that several sources have noted that tattoos are still regulated. However, if there are in unseen places or are small enough to cover with plasters people will still be allowed into the establishment.

Enjoy the indoor bath and the outdoor baths, both a traditional Japanese cultural experience. Visitors can just come for a day trip and leave feeling just a little bit more refreshed and renewed. Those staying in the ryokan overnight can enjoy 24/7 access to the outdoor baths. Going in around sunrise or sunset is a peaceful and unreal experience, and with it being open all night it would be a shame to waste an opportunity to enjoy a midnight rotenburo (outdoor hot spring) experience!
