Chiba comprises an area neighboring Tokyo, and is home to not only some of the nation's most famous theme parks but also astounding areas of gorgeous, nearly untouched nature. Compared to its famous neighboring prefecture, Chiba is relatively unvisited. Although perhaps less popular, Chiba is in no ways lacking in things to do, see, and taste. A great place to go to escape large crowds and explore a path off-the-beaten-path, visitors can explore the forests of Chiba, the sea, and  enjoy some of the prefecture's most famous products including the peanut.

Many people are surprised to hear about the many products and dishes that Chiba is known for. Some are not what you would think, but with Chiba's interesting and ideal geographical location, Chiba has access to vast farming grounds, as well as the sea, forest, and some mountains. So there is access to many resources that also allow Chiba to yield many goods. With a large fishing industry here, people are surprised that you can get amazingly fresh fish in parts of Chiba, and the mountains brings some delicious vegetables and root vegetables. Below are a list of some of the things that should be on your must try list in Chiba!

1. Namero(u)

Probably the most well-known food to come from Chiba Prefecture, namerou is a minced fish dish. Although at first, it may not sound the most appetizing, namerou is actually said to be so good that you will want to lick your plate after, which is where the name came from. Namerou consists of usually horse mackerel finely minced with miso, shiso (perilla leaves), and leek or green onion. Because fresh fish is used and mixed with the strong flavor of miso, the dish is said to not be fishy at all, and instead be a delicious meal to enjoy. You can find this around Japan now, but around the Boso Peninsula in its birthplace of Chiba is often recommended as the place to try it.

2. Katsuura Tantanmen

Now tantanmen is not unique to Chiba and can be found all over Japan, having its origins in China. But Katsuura Tantanmen is a dish known in Chiba and has a slightly different take on the classic tantanmen. The Katsuura Tantanmen is said to have originated in the town of Katsuura as a way to warm up the ama divers who returned from the cold sea. The dish contains extra chili oil and omits the traditionally used sesame paste to create a unique and hot flavor. For those that enjoy spicy food, and enjoy ramen noodles, this is definitely a dish to try out!

3. Peanuts

People are often surprised to know that Chiba is actually one of the countries leading producers of peanuts due to the soil found there. Trying them fresh at the place they're sourced is like nothing else. The peanuts are said to be nutty(of course!), with a distinct flavor, a subtle sweetness, and all around delicious. You can find them baked, steamed, boiled, pickled, and mixed within other snacks, but the main way its known is steamed (yude rakkasei) and eaten with beer.

4. Fresh Fish

Similar to an oyakodon but with clams instead.

6. Jumbo Sushi/Narita Sushi/Futomaki

This form of sushi is popular in the Narita area of Chiba, and is often brought out during celebrations. Often the sushi is artfully prepared, so that when cut, the sushi has unique patterns and colors. You can often find egg as well as seaweed accompanying local vegetables in the sushi.
