Okinawa consists of a series of small islands, off the coast of the southern most side of Japan. Because of its sub-tropical climate and beautiful sandy beaches with clear waters, Okinawa has become a very popular spot for vacationers. With many different regions each with their own set of unique places and landmarks, Okinawa is a place that has their own culture and pace.
The islands of Okinawa are lumped into three main groups.
The eponymous Okinawa Islands contain the main urban and cultural centers of the cluster, and can be a good place to start your exploration with a little bit of everything. The main island of Okinawa is said to have the majority of the population of people leaving in the prefecture, and there are many US military bases on the island as well. The main island also contains their capital Naha, that has many shops and places to eat, and is great for those who enjoy a little bit more of a city feel.
The Miyako Islands are the fourth largest islands of Okinawa and is mostly known for their beaches. A definite must for lovers of gorgeous white sand and crystal clear water! They are probably one of the most popular destinations for people looking for that summer, beach getaway, and those that enjoy water activties such as snorkeling and scuba diving. Throughout Miyako Island, there are many spiritual sites as well, that further add to the calm, relaxing vibe of the islands.
A recommended beach to check out is Yonaha Maehama Beach as it was voted one of the best beaches of Japan! The Miyako Islands also add a little bit more peace of mind for families as it is one of the only islands not inhabited with the venemous habu snakes known throughout other Okinawan islands.
The lush, diverse Yaeyama islands are like microcosms within microcosms, with the scenic Ishigaki Island serving as the main transportation hub, and the jungles of Iriomote Island offering something for the traveler looking for a truly remote adventure. Well preserved Ryukyu villages are also available for visiting.
Although both the Miyako Islands and the Yaeyama Islands have beautiful beaches, perfect for surfing, relaxing, and snorkeling, Miyako Islands are better known for their beaches whereas Yaeyama is known for their lush greenery and jungle like vegetation. Even less populated than the other two islands, the Yaayama Islands certainly give a very remote island feel, and a chance to know the locals better.
