Beach Destinations in Japan

Updated November 12, 2024

Japan is known for many beautiful and scenic places, but their beaches are not necessarily one of them. However, Japan does have some wonderful beach spots for those who enjoy spending time by the water. Here is a short list of beaches and waterfronts you should check out if you're a fan of spending time out by the waters. And if you do visit, just be sure to continue to keep the beaches clean! Japan is a place that highly regards self-responsibility and monitoring of your own trash. That may be one of the reasons the beaches are quite clean, so if you do visit, be sure to pick up after yourself and contribute to keeping the beaches trash free and the waters clean!

By far some of the most gorgeous beaches in Japan are located on the Okinawa Islands. The prefecture of Okinawa has beaches that contain bright, clear blue water and sandy beaches making you feel like you're on your dream tropical vacation. Just be aware of the strong currents within the waters as well as when jellyfish season is as to avoid being stung by the venomous critters.

Nishihama Beach

Nishihama Beach is found on Hateruma Island in Okinawa. The picturesque beach is perfect for those who are looking for the perfect summer getaway.

Sunayama Beach

Part of the okinawa islands on miyako island, Sunayama Beach is the perfect little getaway spot to relax under the warm sun. There is a fun little cave to go under to give you some relief from the sun.

Kondoi Beach

On Taketomi Island, there is a perfect beach with shallow waters so you can dip your feet in while being able to still see where you're stepping. The waters tend to be more still as well giving off a very quiet, serene feeling.

Other places throughout Japan other than Okinawa have some nice beaches too and are ideal spots to sit and relax.

Miho Beach

Miho Beach in Shizuoka is a nice beach to go to to gather your thoughts as you gaze upon the perfect view. You can see Mount Fuji from this beach making it a perfect, scenic beach destination.

Amami Oshima

Located in the Kagoshima prefecture, this beach has beautiful, blue waters and classic, sandy beaches. The beaches are similar to the ones found in Okinawa as it is also geographically very close.

Enoshima

Enoshima beach is located near Tokyo in the Kanagawa Prefecture. It is a popular beach for those on mainland Japan who want to layout and have a casual beach day. As a bonus, there is also an aquarium located on the island.

Jodogahama Beach

Jodogahama Beach is a quiet and pretty little beach in the Iwate prefecture. Beach goers here can enjoy a little boat cruise to relax and enjoy the view.

Shirahama Beach

Shirahama Beach, not to be confused with the one in Chiba, is located on the mainland in the Wakayama prefecture, and is known to have hot spring resorts with beautiful beaches. It can get crowded in the summer so get ready to claim your spot early beach towels in hand!
