Winter brings forth all of the cold weather comforts that only it can provide. Delicious, warm comfort foods are aplenty, and there are so many winter activities to enjoy. Many parts of Japan get snowfall, leading to many snow-related festivals, the most notable being the Sapporo Snow Festival. It gets pretty chilly all throughout Japan. However, activities like skiing become available and you can be treated to some pretty breathtaking views that truly make you feel as though you’re living in a winter wonderland. The holidays bring their own brand of festivities, making Japan a truly magical place during the winter.

What to pack

  • Warm clothing (Long pants, sweaters, winter hats)
  • Scarves and gloves
  • Boots for warmth and to protect against possible snow
  • Heat patches or portable warmers (Called kairo is Japanese, it can be found in Japanese dollar stores as well)
  • Lip Balm - the cold air can cause chapped lips

Tip

Take a dip in one of Japan’s famous onsens (hot springs) to warm up from the cold air and enjoy a one-of-a-kind cultural experience.
