Built in the Edo period, Goryokaku is a western-style, star shaped fort in Hakodate. The fort was built to protect Hakodate from a Russian fleet and was built in a star-shape to allow for better protection while reducing the number of blind spots where a cannon could not fire. A historic and culturally relevant site, Goryokaku is also a popular cherry blossom viewing site come springtime due to the 1,600 cherry trees surrounding the fort.
